April 22 is Earth Day. Here are some ways you can celebrate and bring awareness to the day!

1. Volunteer

So many fantastic organizations are doing incredible things for environmental protection and preservation. Find one in your community and volunteer! From planting trees and cleaning up parks to running recycling programs, there are so many ways to get involved.

2. Ride your bike

Instead of driving, perhaps ride your bike. Whether running an errand or heading to work, it鈥檚 an excellent opportunity to exercise and reduce carbon emissions.

3. Don't forget your reusable bags

Plastic shopping bags have made their way out, but there are still other instances where a reusable bag comes in handy. For example, reusable bags can be used instead of plastic when purchasing fruits and vegetables. And a reusable bag is still a better option than a paper bag at the store.

4. Support your local farmer's market

Where and how we get our food significantly impacts our carbon footprint. Food that has travelled from overseas or the US takes a lot of carbon to get here! Instead, buy locally grown food when possible. It benefits the earth, our community, and the local economy.

5.听Get into thrifting!

Environmentally friendly retail? Yes, please. Thrifting reduces the need for resources, labour and carbon emissions used to create clothing, household items and other products. Plus, it can be fun and will save money! Whether you鈥檙e shopping for clothes or something around the house, buying second-hand can feel like a treasure hunt.

6. Go paperless

Paper from magazines, flyers, publications and bills typically end up in the bin. Instead, subscribe to magazines and newspapers digitally, use online flyers, choose paperless billing and opt out of anything printed.

7. Watch a documentary

Watching a nature documentary, like Planet Earth or Our Planet, remind us of what we are trying to preserve! Take some time to learn more about our beautiful planet and the life that calls it home.

8. Grow food for the food bank

If you have a veggie garden or are part of a community garden, initiate a grow challenge! This summer, your family, friends and neighbours can pledge to grow extra vegetables and fruits in their gardens to donate to the local food bank.

9.听Replace with green products

Consider buying a green product instead of the standard one when purchasing something for your home. It could be a more efficient or healthier product for the environment. It can also be a product that comes with less wasteful packaging.

10. Try shinrin-yoku

Shinrin-yoku is a Japanese concept that translates to forest therapy or 鈥渕aking contact with and taking in the atmosphere of the forest.鈥 It's the idea of simply being in the great outdoors and mindfully connecting to nature, using all five of our senses.

Happy Earth Day!
