Time is of the essence when reporting a gas leak or outage. These situations can quickly become emergencies, putting you and your family's safety at risk if the gas leak is not handled correctly. That's why it's essential to know what to do in the event of a suspected gas leak or outage.

Do: Don't:
  • learn how to detect the signs of a natural gas leak in your home.听 Do you smell rotten eggs, hear hissing sounds, notice higher-than-normal gas usage or experience physical symptoms (i.e., headache, dizziness, nausea)?听
  • evacuate as soon as you can.听
  • call 911 immediately if you think you鈥檝e been exposed to natural gas and wait for help.
  • know how to shut off natural gas in your home to prevent additional exposure to gas.
  • contact your local utility company if you suspect a natural gas leak in your home.
  • stay indoors, please evacuate as soon as possible.
  • try to repair the leak on your own; always contact a professional.
  • use phones, light switches or electronic devices inside the house. Any use of electricity can cause a spark that may ignite the leaked gas.
  • use matches or lighters. Any open flame could cause an explosion.
  • keep windows and doors closed; accumulated natural gas could make the situation worse.
